In Katakalou willen we een eigentijds gebouw creëren dat zoveel mogelijk van de natuurlijke schoonheid van de site behoudt. Nauwelijks zichtbaar, gebaseerd op traditionele waarden van de Griekse bouw.

​​De sobere en rechte lijnen contrasteren mooi met het landschap, maar tegelijkertijd blijft het gebouw ondergeschikt en overschaduwd door het bergachtige en bosrijke terrein.

Door het gebruik van eenvoudig ter plaatse gestort beton en lokaal geproduceerd hardhout als belangrijkste bouwmateriaal, gebouwd door lokale arbeiders, is de ecologische voetafdruk zeer minimaal. De hele constructie is kleinschalig en lokaal uitgevoerd.

Twee onopvallende maar imposante stukken beton in dezelfde kleur en textuur als de rotsen die het omringen...

Het huis zelf is georganiseerd rond twee routes. De eerste is extern en verdeelt het gebouw op natuurlijke wijze in tweeën, die van de monopati erboven naar de waterkant beneden leidt. De andere is intern: de twee gebouwen hebben elk een trap die begint bij het dakterras en eindigt in een centrale ondergrondse van boven verlichte galerij, die de twee op een nogal dramatische manier met elkaar verbindt.

De gebouwen komen uit het landschap en openen zich naar de zee. Grote ramen van vloer tot plafond aan de voorzijde zorgen voor een groot gevoel van ruimte en verrijken de ruimtes met steeds wisselende tinten van dit zeepanorama. Zonwering aan de voorzijde in kamerhoge traditionele luiken, gaat de opwarming van de binnenzijde tegen en creëert tegelijkertijd een traditionele penseelstreek, een verwijzing naar de traditionele houten uitbouwen in Glossa en Skopelos.

De vrij gesloten zijwanden hebben kleine openingen. Deze kleine openingen kunnen worden afgesloten met luiken gemaakt van het afvalhout dat is gebruikt om het beton te vormen. De cementsluier op deze luiken zorgt ervoor dat de luiken naadloos en subtiel opgaan in de gevel.

De inheemse lokale planten rond het huis mogen relatief ongetemd groeien, waardoor beide structuren lijken te zijn teruggetrokken in het omliggende landschap. Door deze opzettelijke indringing kan het de ambiguïteit uitspelen die wordt geboden door de schijnbare, bijna gecamoufleerde onzichtbaarheid van buitenaf die naar binnen kijkt, en de uitgestrektheid en totaliteit van de uitzichten die het biedt vanuit de kamers die naar buiten kijken.

In dit huis heerst een sfeer van grote soberheid. Door de eenvoudige opbouw ligt het accent hier op de omgeving en het oneindige uitzicht en niet op het gebouw.

In Katakalou we want to create a contemporary building that preserves as much of the natural beauty of the site as possible. Barely visible, based on traditional values of Greek building.

The sober and straight lines contrast nicely with the landscape, but at the same time the building remains subservient and overshadowed by the mountainous and wooded terrain.

Through the use of simple on-site poured concrete and locally produced hardwood as the main building material, built by local workers, the ecological footprint is very minimal. The entire construction is carried out in a small-scale and local way.

Two inconspicuous but imposing pieces of concrete in the same colour and texture as the rocks that embrace it…

The house itself is organised around two routes. The first is external and naturally divides the building in two, leading from the monopati above down to the waterfront. The other is internal: the two buildings each have a staircase starting at the roof terrace and ending in a central underground toplit gallery, connecting the two in a rather dramatic way.

The buildings emerge out of the landscape and open up towards the sea. Large floor-to-ceiling windows at the front provide a great sense of space and enrich the spaces with ever-changing shades of this marine panorama. Sun blinds at the front in floor-to-ceiling traditional shutters, counteract the warming of the interior and at the same time create a traditional brushstroke, a reference to the traditional wooden extensions in Glossa and Skopelos.

The rather closed side walls have small openings. These small openings can be closed with shutters made from the waste wood used to form the concrete. The cement veil on these shutters ensures that the shutters blend seamlessly and subtly into the façade.

The native local plants around the house will be allowed to grow relatively untamed, so that both structures will appear to have receded into the surrounding landscape. Quite deliberate, this encroachment allows it to play off the ambiguity afforded by its apparent, almost camouflaged, invisibility from the outside looking in, and the expanse and totality of the views it provides from inside its rooms looking out.

There is an atmosphere of great sobriety in this house. By simple construction, the accent here is on the surroundings and the infinite view and not on the building.
